On October 5th 2011, the “Doing Careers Differently” guide was launched at the autumn Radiate event meeting (Radiate is a network of high flying senior professionals with lived experience of disability or health conditions – Sponsored by Lloyds Banking Group). As part of the launch event there was a lively panel discussion on careers and employment. This panel included Phil Friend (Radar Chair), Dr Rachel Perkins (Equality 2025), Tom Lichy (British Deaf Association), Catherine Levy (Lloyds Banking Group – Head of Implementation and Risk Transformation) and Jane Cordell (Foreign and Commonwealth Office/Action on Hearing Loss).
The evening also featured a speed mentoring section where recent graduates from the Radar Leadership Programme were able to discuss and ask questions to Radiate members about their careers and what had been some of the defining moments.
The “Doing Careers Differently” guide is free to download from the Radar website and is for anyone with lived experience of disability or health conditions, who may think that a satisfying career is out of their reach. “Doing Careers Differently” vividly demonstrates that disability does not mean a career dead end and shows that it is possible to make work meaningful and at the same time, earn a decent wage.
Liz Sayce, Radar’s CEO, “Doing Careers Differently draws on stories of people with lived experience of disability and health conditions, including the turning points in their careers, as well as their tips and thoughts on how their experiences of disability have actually helped their careers”.
