The Stop Disability Hate Crime Project Background

The aim of Radar’s Stop Disability Hate Crime project is to increase reporting and recording of disability hate crime. The project aims to empower disabled people and their organisations to tackle disability hate crime by:

  • Developing a national independent disability hate crime reporting centre;
  • Providing guidance on minimum standards for such reporting centres to empower disabled people’s organisations to set up their own reporting centres; and
  • Raising disabled people’s awareness of disability hate crime and incidents and how to report them.

The first stage of the project focused on disabled peoples’ understanding of what is a disability hate crime; their experience of reporting disability hate crime; and their reasons for not reporting disability hate crime. We have also been talked to third party reporting sites and police forces about their experiences of taking reports of disability hate crime.

The second stage of the project used what we  learnt from the survey and discussions with third party reporting sites to inform our work on raising disabled people’s awareness of disability hate crime and the minimum standards for reporting centres.

Out of this research we have produced the following guidance documents:

  • Let’s Stop Disability Hate Crime – A guide for disabled people
  • Let’s Stop Disability Hate Crime – A guide for disabled people – Easy Read Version
  • Let’s Stop Disability Hate Crime – A guide for setting up third party reporting sites
  • Let’s Stop Disability Hate Crime – A guide for setting up third party reporting sites – Easy Read Version
  • Let’s Stop Disability Hate Crime – A guide for non disabled people
