The 2010 Equality Act introduced the public sector equality duty. On 5 April 2011 this replaced the Disability Equality Duty.
Radar has been campaigning for effective specific duties as a tool to support public bodies do their public sector equality duty and to help disabled people to hold public bodies to account.
However, the coalition Government has now published a policy review in which they propose to dramatically reduce the specific duties so that there is no clear duty to involve or engage disabled people and to carry out equality impact assessments – which is still required by the public sector equality duty. Radar will be responding.
