From its very inception, Radar has been at the forefront of the disability rights movement in Britain.
Radar played a leading role in the campaigns of the 1980s which led to the passing of the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act and the hard won rights of the DDA were strengthened in the 2010 Equality Act. We also ensured that Right to Control of disabled people over their support become part of the 2009 Welfare Reform Act.
Radar has provided the secretariat to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Disability (APPDG) for over 25 years. The APPDG is co-chaired by Baroness Jane Campbell and Anne McGuire MP. The APPDG strives to make future-proofing equality a major feature of policy-making so that disabled people can participate widely in all aspects of social, public and family life.
Our ambitions for 2011:
- Strive for welfare reforms that offer everyone living with health conditions or disability rapid, flexible support to get sustainable employment and careers
- Campaign for a social care system that enables disabled people to socialise, gain skills and contribute to society
- Continue our support for MPs to become effective representatives for disabled people – and for disabled people who wish to stand in Parliament
Radar produces a range of publications, aimed at a wide range of audiences including public sector organisations, local Government and disabled people.
They are designed to educate, inform and further our agenda of freedom and choice, the ending of disability related poverty, more people living with disability or health conditions in leadership positions and greater equality and justice for all disabled people.
The Doing Life Differently series is a set of self help guides written by and for people living with disability or health conditions, on subjects such as managing money, getting the best from IT, and progressing in your career.
If Only I’d Known That A Year Ago… is an information-packed guide to services, welfare rights and facilities available to people living with disability or health conditions, their family and friends.
The Radar National Key Scheme (NKS) guide, a written guide to the 9,000 NKS toilets and local services throughout the UK.
Our leadership and empowerment programmes change people’s lives. We provide disabled people with the skills and the confidence to help them realise their potential as leaders and in doing so, they not only improve their own lives, but also make a difference to the lives of millions of other disabled people in the country.
