Radar £5 Appeal – Help put the voices of disabled people directly to policy makers!

If you could spare just five pounds, you can help disabled people’s worries and concerns reach MPs, members of the House of Lords and the Government. It has never been more important for politicians to understand what their decisions mean in practice – they affect your benefits, employment opportunities, social care and more.

Radar has a proven track record in influencing decision makers to improve things. For instance, we were critical in pushing for the recent ban on pre-employment health questions by employers. We have convinced lawmakers to make housing more accessible for people with mobility difficulties. All this and more has been achieved on a shoestring budget – and now we need your help for the next big push.

In the next few months Parliament will be debating the future funding of social care, ‘portability’, health service reforms, welfare reform, benefits, employment support – and more. We need the decision-makers to understand disabled people’s experiences!

Radar supports the All-party Parliamentary Disability Group, which brings together MPs and peers to debate policy with disabled people and our organisations. MPs and peers are then well-informed and go on to raise important issues in debates in the Commons and Lords. It is the only All-party Group that covers all aspects of disability – it stops our efforts being fragmented between different impairment groups and organisations.

For instance, at an All-party Group meeting in October last year disabled people voiced their concerns directly to the Minister for Disabled People, Maria Miller, over the Government’s plans to scrap the DLA mobility component from people living in care – that is, the benefit individuals in care rely on to get out and about in their communities. Now the Government is reconsidering its plans.

In the past Radar has had sponsorship to cover a member of staff to research and write policy briefings, organise the All-party Group meetings, meet MPs and peers and invite disabled people to attend and talk directly with parliamentarians.

We no longer have any sponsorship to cover this. But this vital work must continue. We know times are tight so we are asking large numbers of disabled people and allies to give £5. If everyone helps we will hit our target.
